Rowan Linton, a struggling scholar in Emberdale County, gains three wives through a mysterious system. His kinsman Corbin Linton tries to trade blighted grain for Rowan's wives, but fails. After losing a wager, Corbin is tormented by his wife while Rowan wins Captain Gareth's support.
